Congratulations on our 8th Grade graduates of St. Benedict School who will be concluding their 8th grade year with a Mass this Wednesday evening, May 18th. May Our Lord bless them and all of our students and staff as we conclude the school year this week. May this summer be an opportunity for the kind of learning that summer vacation affords!
At the beginning of the week this past week, the U.S. Bishops asked us as a faith community to offer acts of fasting and prayer this past Friday, May 13th, asking for the Lord’s mercy and peace to reign in our country in anticipation for changing the laws regarding abortion.
I realize that this request was made before this weekend, but anytime we can offer sincere prayers and penitential actions will be for our own benefit and for the benefit of others. So, you might consider offering a day of fasting or a time of prayer over this upcoming week as well.
My understanding is that the ruling regarding the Dobbs case might be announced as early as tomorrow, Monday, May 16th. Our laws allowing abortion have been some of the most extreme in the world, believe it or not! And, thank you to all who participated in the Walk for Life, either as a walker or as a sponsor, yesterday, Saturday, May 14th.
We have heard some reports of threats against churches and church buildings in some of the larger cities. We will continue to display signs on the grounds of our parish properties that express our desire to respect and defend human life in all of its stages. Yes, there are many needs and issues in our world and in our local community as well. But, the promotion of a culture of life remains the fundamental reason we will continue to display those signs.
As mentioned last week, see other information about plans for a Vacation Bible School in June as well as other events, like a used book sale. And, please spread the news of our first ever "Blessing of Bikes" (motorbikes, that is) next Sunday, May 22nd at 1:30 p.m. at the parking lot of Sts. Peter & Paul in Lore City. We will need a good weather committee for that event as well!
May Our Lord Jesus Christ help us to experience the transforming power of His mercy as He helps us to be always ready for the gift of eternal life in Heaven!
